“Another Myth of the Mayas”

A very interesting, well-written, thoughtful, non-negative, optimistic piece on the recent sensational story of a 15-year-old Canadian boy’s “discovery” of a lost Mayan city. The hypothesis turned out to be untrue, although the young science enthusiast had been given quick world-wide attention and a “Medal of Merit” by the Canadian Space Agency.

The type of thinking outlined in this article, so sorely lacking these days, is what we need to move forward as a civilized, educated society. There are no villains here, only intelligent reflection that moves the issue, and us, forward.

This article appears in today’s Los Angeles Times (Friday, May 20, 2016, Main Section, Op-Ed, Page A13), and was authored by Stephennie Mulder, a professor of art history and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

If you consider yourself a rational, educated thinker, you owe it to yourself to read this piece.
